 Fiber Optic Internet Eco-Friendly

The Carbon Footprint of Fast Internet: Is it Possible to have Green Fiber Optics?

As the global customer appetite for internet speeds increases, so too does the overall environmental cost of the networks. Fiber optics is a vastly improved internet technology over copper wires; more so it offers an even faster option at lower energy use. But how environmentally friendly is it?

What is Fiber Optic Internet?

Fiber optic uses signals with the help of light transmitted through tiny threads of glass or plastic to transfer high speed data. While copper cables supplied the need for a connection between two points, fibre optics supplied the capacity to transmit larger quantities of information, with less electricity consumption, making for faster internet.

Potential Environmental Advantages of Fiber Optics

  • Energy Efficiency: Fibre optic cables use less energy, thus lowering energy consumption and overall emission.

  • Reduced Carbon Footprint: This implies that through use of fibre optics, the overall carbon emissions are reduced by use of lesser energy.

  • Longer Lifespan: They are also longer in service hence need for frequent replacements as compared to copper and translates to saving on materials.

  • Fewer Raw Materials: Fibre optics are also more flexible and slimmer than copper wire, which means less use of materials in manufacture.

Challenges to Consider

Fibre optics are relatively more sustainable in the long run as compared to electrical cables: however, laying fibre optic cables can be a complex process that consumes energy and is disruptive of the natural environment. Though it has cons of its usage in the short run as compared to copper but the merits of using it in the long run in that it saves energy and is durable more consider it as green.

Conclusion

Fibre optic internet is better than the copper wired system as it would be explained below. It is a more environmentally friendly device for our constantly increasing technological demands. Spending on the fibre optics is very important as use of the internet increases hence creating a pave way for a greener future.
